Bedroom Door Makeover

When I was younger, I used my bedroom door as a place to express my creativity.  It started with stickers when I was a kid and progressed to boy band posters as I entered my teen years (I was totally that girl).  I’m surprised my parents let me do this (although I guess I never really asked for permission) because it must have looked ridiculous to any visitor using the upstairs bathroom.

I wanted my girls to be able to express themselves and personalize their bedroom doors but within limits 🙂

When planning out the ‘design’ for this project, my first criteria was something that looked good.  Having a bungalow, the doors to the girls’ rooms are right off the dining room.  Anyone walking through the house catches a glimpse so I wanted something that fit with the décor of the house.

My next criteria was something that would allow the girls to personalize their space.  To accomplish this, I painted the doors entirely in chalkboard paint!  I think this will be a really great feature because it will grow with the girls as they get older.  Drawings and ABCs will easily transition into random doodles and important messages.

I also crafted personalized initial medallions out of dollar store materials.

I love how these turned out and I wish I would have taken pictures at each step to post a proper how to.  Here are the instructions without the photos.

Step 1: Gather your supplies
I used a plastic mirror, wooden letter, decorative beads, paint and a glue gun.

Step 2: Paint your materials
I sprayed the mirror (including the reflective piece) with a metallic spray paint and I painted the wooden letter using black chalkboard paint.

Step 3: Embellish your letter
I glued plastic beads but there are plenty of options: decorative paper, buttons, ribbon or jewels.

Step 4: Glue the pieces together
A glue gun worked really well for this step.
